Do guys get annoyed when their girlfriends congratulate them and tell them great job?

I think my guy got a little annoyed with me when I told him great job or congratulations on his midterm exam. Its like all I am trying to do is show my support in something that he accomplished. I know that it is normal for him to do well on exams because he is intelligent. Its a new relationship too so I don't want him to think that I don't recognize his efforts. This guy could be the good guy that I have been hoping for my whole life and I don't want to ruin it either. How can I tone down how much I support I show so that he does not feel as though I am trying to smother him?
