Re:swapping alternator?

i have an izuzu trooper diesel the alternator is not charging. it has a vacuum pump on it driving the brake servo. i have spare secondhand alternators that i can get to fit but they have no pump. can i botch a vacuum line from the breather manifold to the brake servo a la all petrol engines? is there a reason there is an independent vacuum pump on any diesel automobile engine i have seen?
