Penalty Shootout last night?

Can anyone tell me what the Referee was doing with Glen Loovins before his penalty? He had Loovins by the arm and chatting in his ear for ages before he took and missed his kick. If he scored we where through, i just found it odd that he didn't do it with any of the other takers. Hmmmm.
