What is the significance of bilateral symmetry in a Fast Fourier Transform?

I have taken a fast Fourier transform of a data set ( >4000) which seemed to be oscillatory in nature. The when the outputs of the transform are plotted, a completely (save the initial peak) bilateral in symmetry. What is the significance of the symmetry in the FFT? What does it say about my data?
